Abstract

1534196 Black iron oxide pigment REDLAND ROOF TILES Ltd 10 May 1977 [11 May 1976] 19435/76 Heading C1A Black iron oxide pigment is made by adding an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide or ammonia to an aqueous solution of ferrous sulphate which is at a temperature of 64‹ C. or more, maintaining the temperature of the combined solutions above 64‹ C. until the pH is 8À5-10À0 and oxidizing the combined solutions to deposit iron oxide. The ferrous sulphate solution preferably has a starting temperature of 64-100‹ C. and a concentration of at least 35 g/l. The solution added thereto, which is preferably NaOH, is added with continuous stirring to prevent local pH variations and the rate of addition is preferably such that viscosity of the combined solution does not rise above 1000 centipoises. The solutions are suitably oxidized by bubbling air therethrough.
