Abstract
1535889 Fe 3 O 4 black pigment BAYER AG 20 April 1977 [24 April 1976] 16370/77 Heading C1A Fe3O 4 black pigment having a magnetite structure is continuously made by introducing a ferrous salt solution and the solution of an alkaline precipitating agent into the first vessel of a cascade of vessels, oxidizing the resulting suspension with free O 2 -containing gas simultaneously in each vessel of the cascade at pH 9-10 and 60-80‹ C. while maintaining the concentration of iron oxide in the suspension discharged from the last vessel at 30-50 g/l Fe 3 O 4 . The cascade preferably comprises three vessels, the ferrous salt is preferably ferrous sulphate and the precipitating agent may be NaOH or NH 4 OH. Oxidation is suitably continued until the ratio of Fe(III):Fe(II) in the suspension discharged from the last vessel is 1.8.
