Abstract

1,133,863. Hydrated ferric oxide. SOC. EDISON. 28 Feb., 1966 [3 March, 1965], No. 8772/66. Heading C1A. Hydrated ferric oxide (FeO 2 H) is precipitated by adding an aqueous solution of a ferric salt to an aqueous solution of a ferrous salt containing hydrated ferric oxide (FeO 2 H) as a nucleating agent, the mixture being maintained at 50-100‹ C. and pH 2-5. The precipitate may be subsequently filtered and dried at below 300‹ C. to give a yellow pigment; calcination at 400-600‹ C. gives a red pigment. Preferably the ferric salt solution contains 50-600 g. of ferric salt per litre of solution and the ferrous salt solution 10-500 g. A preferred molecular ratio Fe(II)/Fe(III) is from 1 to 30. Specified salts are ferrous sulphate, ferrous ammonium sulphate, ferrous chloride, ferric sulphate, ferric chloride, ferric alum. A base may be added simultaneously with the ferric salt solution to adjust the pH. The nucleating agent may be prepared by precipitation of ferrous hydroxide by NaOH from a solution of ferrous sulphate and oxidation of the hydroxide with an oxidizing agent.
