Abstract
For the production of g -ferric oxide, a ferrous salt solution containing an oxidizing agent and a cobaltous salt, e.g. the sulphate, insufficient for the formation of cobaltous ferrite and not exceeding 10 per cent by weight of the said salts present is treated with an alkali agent, e.g. caustic soda, and the resulting suspension is boiled to form triferric tetroxide which is then oxidized in air at 200 DEG -300 DEG C. The cobalt-containing ferric oxide so formed may be mixed with a binder, e.g. poly-vinyl chloride, for the production of magnetic recording tapes.
