Abstract

Particles of cobalt-containing g ferric oxide having lengths between 0,5 m and 3m and widths between 0,05m and 1,5m , containing 1 to 10 atom per cent of cobalt, for use in magnetogram carriers, are produced by reacting an aqueous solution of ferrous sulphate, nitrate or chloride and cobaltous sulphate, nitrate or chloride with a solution or suspension of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium or barium hydroxide until a pH of 4,5 to 6,5 is reached, oxidizing the mixture with air, oxygen, chlorine or nitrobenzene, adding further amounts of the above-mentioned ferrous and cobaltous salts, hydroxide and oxidizing agent or a suspension of ferrous and cobaltous hydroxides with oxidizing agent, to obtain the required dimensions of the particles, and then dehydrating, reducing and oxidizing the material to obtain the g ferric oxide. In examples ferrous sulphate and chloride, cobaltous sulphate and chloride and sodium hydroxide solutions are reacted with air as oxidising agent, and the products are dehydrated by heating, reduced in hydrogen or carbon monoxide and oxidized in air.
