Abstract

1418733 Cobalt modified iron oxide SONY CORP 31 Jan 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 4794/73 Heading C1A An acicular cobalt modified iron oxidehydroxide is made by forming a mixture of Fe<SP>2</SP> +ions, Co<SP>2+</SP> ions and hydroxyl ions to form a suspension of the hydroxides, the number of Co<SP>2+</SP> ions being not more than 30% of the total of Co<SP>2+</SP> + Fe<SP>2+</SP> ions and the number of OH ions being more than 2À5 times the total of Co<SP>2+</SP> + Fe<SP>2+</SP>, and oxidizing the suspension by passing air through it to form the cobalt modified iron oxide-hydroxide. The modified iron oxidehydroxide can be converted to Co modified Fe 3 O 4 by reduction with hydrogen and optionally reoxidized by heating in oxygen to Co modified Fe 2 O 3 for use in the manufacture of magnetic recording media.
