Abstract

1385777 Ferromagnetic iron oxide BAYER AG 3 May 1972 [6 May 1971] 20560/72 Heading ClA [Also in Division C3] Ferromagnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 is prepared by initially forming needle-shaped α-FeO(OH) pigments by precipitation and oxidation of a suspension containing a Fe (II) salt (e.g. FeSO 4 ), PO 4 <SP>1</SP> ions and seeds of α-FeO(OH) formed by precipitation and oxidation of a solution containing a Fe (II) salt and optionally PO 4 <SP>1</SP> ions, and subsequently dehydrating the α-FeO(OH) pigments to α-Fe 2 O 3 , optionally tempering, reducing to Fe 3 O 4 and then finally reoxidizing to γ-Fe 2 O 3 . The preparation agent may be NaOH, Na 2 CO 3 , NH 3 , metallic Fe or urotropin, the preparation preferably being carried out in acid conditions. The oxidizing agent may be air Cl 2 , ClO 3 <SP>1</SP>, NO 3 <SP>1</SP> or nitrobenzene. The PO 4 <SP>1</SP> ions may be added as phosphoric acids or their water-soluble salts; preferably in an amount to give 0À1-4% by wt. P 2 O 5 in the α-FeO(OH) end product; and either prior to or during seed or pigment formation. The rate of α-FeO(OH) pigment formation may be 0À5-15 g./l./hr at a temp. of 40-95‹ C. The α-FeO(OH) obtained may then be filtered, washed, mashed dispersed refiltered, dried and then dehydrated at 400‹ C', to obtain the α - Fe 2 O 3 ; tempered at 400-900‹ C. for 15-60 mins.; reduced to Fe 3 O 4 at 400-440‹ C. in an atmosphere of H 2 and steam, cooled in N 2 at 250-300‹ C., and then re-oxidized at 290‹ C. to form γ-Fe 2 O 3 .
