Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title powder with superior dispersibility and orientation property in magnetic coating without sintering the particles by synthesizing α- FeOOH in a basic aq. soln. and washing the α-FeOOH in an aq. org. acid soln. of pH 2W3, followed by heat reduction or reduction and oxidation.
CONSTITUTION: The above α-FeOOH is dispersed in pure water. An org. acid such as citric acid is added to adjust the dispersion to pH 2.0W3.0, and the α-FeOOH is wasged with strirring. The washed α-FeOOH is then reduced in a H2 atmosphere at 250W500°C to produce magnetitie (Fe3O4) magnetic powder. This powder is air-oxidized at below 300°C, usually around 250°C to produce maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) magnetic powder.
