Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain magnetically stable ferromagnetic powder with a high coercive force by subjecting a ferromagnetic iron oxide powder coated with a compound of cobalt ion or cobalt ion and iron ion to a heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: A suspension containing a ferromagnetic powder which serves as dispersed nucleous crystals and cobalt ion or cobalt ion and iron ion is regulated its alkali concentration to 0.5 to 2 N by the addition of an alkali and then subjected to a heat reaction to obtain the ferromagnetic iron oxide powder coated with a compound of cobalt ion or cobalt ion and iron ion. Then, the powder is washed with water, dried, and then heat treated at 120 to 250°C in a non-oxidative atmosphere to obtain the ferromagnetic powder for magnetic recording.
