Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare magnetite readily in air, by adding boric acid to an iron slag, and calcining the resultant mixture at a specific temperature or above.
CONSTITUTION: Boric acid is added to an iron slag, and the resultant mixture is then calcined at 600°C or above in air to melt the boric acid. The melten boric acid forms a film on the surface of the iron slag to prevent the oxidation of FeO by air, and FeO is reacted with Fe2O3 in the iron slag to synthesize magnetite. The iron slag preferably contains a large amount of FeO.
