PURPOSE: To manufacture starting material for magnetic powder, at a low cost, having a small grain size and giving high S/N when used as a magnetic recording medium by maintaining the pH of a reaction soln. within a specified range from the beginning to the end of oxidation reaction of an aqueous soln. contg. Fe2+ of FeSO4 or the like as a principal component after adding alkali.
CONSTITUTION: When an aqueous soln. contg. Fe2+ or the like as a principal component is oxidized after adding alkali, from the beginning to the end of oxidation reaction the pH of the reaction soln. is maintained at 5.5W7.5, and the oxidation is carried out at 25W35°C to obtain α-FeOOH contg. little impurities. This product slightly undergoes a sintering phenomenon in a reduction and oxidation process for converting it into γ-Fe2O3, and it shows superior magnetic characteristics. The α-FeOOH after the reaction can be washed simply, resulting in a reduced production cost.
