Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce the titled sol having excellent light transmitting properties, ultraviolet ray absorbability, dispersibility and coating properties, by reacting a water-soluble titanium compound with water-soluble iron (III) compound and alkaline metal compound and hydrothermally treating the resultant gel. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of a water-soluble titanium compound (e.g. TiCl4) is blended with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble iron (III) compound (e.g. ferric chloride). An alkaline metal hydroxide, carbonate and/or ammonium compound (e.g. NaOH) are then added to the resultant blended solution and reacted to provide a gel, which is subsequently filtered, washed and hydrothermally treated to afford a solid solution sol, having <=0.333mol. ratio of Fe2O3 to TiO2 and consisting of oxides of titanium and iron.
