Abstract

1434894 Etching PENNWALT CORP 4 June 1974 [1 March 1974] 24700/74 Heading B6J A chromate-free etching solution for aluminium or alloys thereof comprises an aqueous solution containing: 15-200 gms./litre of alkali metal hydroxide, 0À5-15 gms./litre of a chelating agent effective to suppress the precipitation of alumina; and 0À0001-1À0 gms./ litre of an oxidizing agent. When using the solution in an etching process the oxidizing agent concentration is maintained throughout. The chelating agent may be sorbitol, gluconic acid, glucoheptonic acid, mannitol, ascorbic acid, sorbore, tannic acid, ethylendiamine tetracelic acid, sodium chrom glycosate, diglycolic acid, picatinic acid, aspartic acid, dithiooxamide, d-gluconolactone or l-rhamnose. The oxidizing agent may be a persulphate, peroxide perborate periodiate, chlorite, chlorate, perchlorate iodate hypochlorite, nitrite, bromate, peroxyphosphate or nitrate. Other suitable oxidizing agents are oxygen and chlorine dioxide gases. Oxygen may be generated by electrolysis of the etching solution using the aluminium to be etched as anode. Etching is at 75-190‹ F.
