Abstract

[Also in Divisions B1 and C2] Unreacted hydrogen fluoride is separated from a gaseous mixture produced by fluorinating a halogenated hydrocarbon containing at least one halogen other than fluorine with hydrogen fluoride by contacting said gaseous mixture with aqueous sulphuric acid of at least 70% by weight conc. to selectively absorb the hydrogen fluoride. In a preferred process the acid is sprayed countercurrently to an ascending stream of the gaseous mixture. The effluent gas may be washed with water to recover the hydrogen chloride, bromide, and/or iodide. The sulphuric acid which has been contacted with the gaseous mixture can be heated to strip off the absorbed hydrogen fluoride or can be reacted with fluorspar to free the absorbed hydrogen fluoride and generate fresh hydrogen fluoride. The sulphuric acid so stripped can be recycled to the absorption process.
