Abstract
Hydrated ferric oxide is produced by reacting an aqueous solution of a ferrous salt which contains at least 100 grams per litre of another water-soluble salt with such amounts of a base that a pH of 4 to 8 is obtained, and with oxygen, chlorine or hydrogen peroxide at between 0 and 75 DEG C. and the hydrated ferric oxide obtained is separated, washed with water and dried, said other water-soluble salt being one which does not react with ferrous or ferric ions to form water-insoluble salts. Suitable salts are: chlorides, sulphates, nitrates, acetates and bromides of the alkali metals, the alkaline earth metals and ammonia. Preferably the salt has the same anion as the ferrous salt and the same cation as the base used. Ferrous chloride and sulphate may be used as the ferrous salt. The process is carried out by passing air or oxygen into the solution of the ferrous salt and other salt and adding the lease little by little to maintain the pH in the range 4-8, preferably 5.5-6.5. The solution is preferably saturated. The base may be an aqueous solution, pure gas, a gas and inert gas mixture e.g. alkali metal and alkaline earth oxides, sodium hydroxide potassium hydroxide, suspensions of calcium oxide and hydroxide, ammonia or organic amines. The entire process may be continuous, a fixed amount of solution being regularly drawn off from the reaction vessel, from which the ferric oxide is precipitated. The salt solution is then cooled to crystallize out the salt, mixed with fresh ferrous salt and returned to the reaction vessel. The hydrated oxide is suitable for gas purification.
