Abstract
The invention comprises complexes of the general formula: Mx[M12(OH)yAz] where M is magnesium, aluminium, iron, sodium, potassium or the ammonium radical, M1 is magnesium, aluminium or iron, A is an a -hydroxy acid ion in chelated form, x is an integer from 1 to 5, y is zero or an integer from 1 to 8 and z is an integer from 1 to 4 and the preparation thereof either by dissolving the stoichiometric amounts of chlorides or sulphates of the metal or metals represented by M and M1 and the a -hydroxy acid or a salt thereof in water and slowly adding thereto the stoichiometric amount of an alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. sodium hydroxide, or by precipitating the hydroxides or carbonates of the metal or metals represented by M and M1, washing the precipitate free from the soluble salts and dissolving the precipitate in the stoichiometric amount of the a -hydroxy acid. Alternatively, in the latter process, one or more of the metal hydroxides or carbonates may be replaced by the corresponding oxide or a co-precipitate of the metal salts is formed with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate with the optional inclusion of ammonium hydroxide or ammonium chloride, and the co-precipitate dissolved in the a -hydroxy acid. The metal carbonates may be dissolved in the a -hydroxy acid under pressure of the carbon dioxide generated in the reaction as in the case of the formation of magnesium or magnesium-iron chelates or in the case of ironII precipitates the reaction is carried out in an inert atmosphere to avoid oxidation. Compounds of the invention wherein M is iron are also prepared by forming the alkali metal hydroxoferrate, adding thereto a solution of the salt of the cation metal to precipitate the required ferrate and thereafter dissolving the precipitate in the a -hydroxy acid. a -Hydroxy acids which may be used include citric, tartaric, lactic, glycolic, gluconic and salicylic acids.
