Abstract
A substantially pure aqueous solution of titanyl sulphate is prepared by reacting a hydroxide, oxide or carbonate of calcium, strontium or barium with an aqueous solution of a commercial grade titanyl sulphate at a temperature not above 55 DEG C. to remove the extraneous metal values therefrom as insoluble sulphates, oxides or oxy-sulphates. The purified titanyl sulphate solution may contain 100-160 grams TiO2 per litre and have a H2SO4/TiO2 mol. ratio of 1.1 to 1.3.ALSO:A water-soluble acidic titanium lactate complex is prepared by reacting a lactate of calcium, strontium or barium with a substantially pure aqueous solution of titanyl sulphate. The preferred products are the titanium monolactate complex wherein the ratio of Ti to lactic acid is 1:1, and the titanium dilactate complex wherein the ratio of Ti to lactic acid is 1:2. Salts may be prepared by altering the pH of the solution which is normally 1 to 2 by adding ammonia, the carbonates of alkali metals, or the hydroxides, oxides and carbonates of calcium, strontium, barium or magnesium. In the preferred process, a purified aqueous solution of titanyl sulphate is prepared by reacting calcium, strontium or barium hydroxide, carbonate or oxide with an aqueous solution of commercial grade titanyl sulphate at a temperature not above 55 DEG C. to remove the extraneous metal values as sulphates, oxides or oxy-sulphates, reacting calcium, strontium or barium lactate with the purified solution so that 1 to 2 mols. of lactic acid is introduced per gram atom of titanium, together with sufficient hydroxide, oxide or carbonate of calcium, strontium or barium to precipitate any excess sulphate ions, filtering the mixture to obtain an acidic titanium lactate complex having a pH of 1 to 2 and then altering the pH by adding suitable alkalies as mentioned above. The alkaline earth metal lactate reacted with the titanyl sulphate may be added as such or prepared in situ from lactic acid and an hydroxide, oxide or carbonate of calcium, strontium or barium. The products may be used as mordants in dyeing processes for treating fabrics and leather, and as a cross-linking agent for cellulosics and polyvinyl alcohols. Examples describe the preparation of the acidic titanium monolactate and dilactate complexes and the preparation of salts therefrom.
