Abstract
533,227. Titanium oxide. NATIONAL TITANIUM PIGMENTS, Ltd. (Verein fur Chemische und Metallurgische Produktion). Aug. 5, 1939, No. 22735. [Class 1 (iii)] Titanium oxide which after calcination has a rutile structure is made by hydrolysis of titanium sulphate by means of "seeds" of oxide or hydroxide of a metal of the fourth group of the periodic system wherein the seeds are made by precipitating the oxide or hydroxide from a salt solution by adding an alkaline reagent, freeing the precipitate from sulphate ions if present, and peptizing the precipitate by warming with a strong mineral acid other than sulphuric acid. Before use the peptized seeds may be coagulated by alkali, washed free from electrolytes, and used as a sol or gel. Preferably the hydrolysis and the production of the seeds take place in the presence of phosphoric acid or a phosphate. The seeds .may be produced from a part of a titanium sulphate solution to be hydrolysed by adding an alkali until the pH is about 3-6, washing thoroughly and peptizing with hydrochloric acid. In an example, a solution of ilmenite in sulphuric acid containing 1 per cent. of phosphoric acid is treated with caustic soda to pH 3-6; the precipitate is washed and stirred with hydrochloric acid at 90‹C. The product is then added to the original titanium sulphate solution and boiled until hydrolysis is complete. The precipitate is calcined at 700‹C. Specification 405,669 is referred to.
