Abstract
Zinc is recovered from viscose processing liquors containing sulphuric acid and a small amount of zinc sulphate, such as are obtained in the process of Specification 467,500 [Group IV] by neutralizing the liquors with caustic soda, lime or chalk to raise the pH to 11-12, precipitating zinc hydroxide with caustic soda solution suitably at above 60 DEG C, and dissolving the hydroxide in sulphuric acid. The solution obtained by pressing alkali cellulose, produced by steeping cellulose in 18 per cent caustic soda, may be used as the caustic soda solution. The process is also applicable to the treatment of waste material from viscose rayon production, and containing zinc hydroxide, calcium sulphate and carbonate, and ferrous and aluminium hydroxides. This is dissolved in dilute sulphuric acid, and the filtered solution oxidized with sodium hypochlorite or sodium bichromate, and then treated with a paste of zinc hydroxide to precipitate iron and aluminium hydroxides. The solution is thereupon treated as above.
