Abstract

Solutions or suspensions containing active titanium nuclei which accelerate the hydrolysis of titanium salt solutions are obtained by heating titanium solutions or suspensions in the presence of organic acids or salts thereof in proportions insufficient to prevent hydrolysis of the solutions or suspensions or to convert them, if partially hydrolyzed, into unhydrolyzed and unhydrolyzable solutions or suspensions, but sufficient to prevent the formation of particles of more than ultra-microscopic dimensions. Thus a basic organic salt of titanium, such as basic titanium oxalate, after being washed free from soluble salts may be heated or boiled with water in the presence or absence of a mineral acid or salt thereof. Or a basic titanium salt of a mineral acid, such as basic titanium sulphate precipitated from a titanium sulphate solution by sodium carbonate in the presence of sodium chloride, may be washed and heated or boiled with an organic acid or salt thereof. Or a titanium sulphate solution may be heated to develop nuclei and the latter be stabilized by adding an organic acid. Or an organic acid or salt thereof may be added to a basicized mineral acid solution of titanium such as the sulphate before or during heat treatment thereof to yield active nuclei. Or titanium hydrate may be heated or boiled with an organic acid in the presence or absence of a mineral acid. Or a basicized solution of an organic acid salt of titanium may be heated or boiled with or without the addition of a mineral acid. The organic acids specified for use are oxalic and tartaric acid, and in the illustrative examples, oxalic acid is present in proportions of 0,25 to 0,5 mols per mol TiO2. The solutions or suspensions containing the nuclei may be evaporated to obtain pastes or dry solids without the efficiency of the nuclei being impaired.
