Abstract
Barium sulphate, particularly for use in the preparation of composite titanium pigments, is prepared by adding free sulphuric acid to a barium carbonate suspension in such a manner that no substantial accumulation of free acid in the suspension is permitted, as, for instance, by pouring the acid, very slowly and with agitation, into an aqueous suspension of the barium carbonate. A catalyst, such as hydrochloric, nitric or acetic acid or barium chloride, may be present, and the reaction is carried out at a temperature preferably below 50 DEG C. To produce a composite titanium pigment, the precipitated barium sulphate may be suspended in a solution of a titanium salt which is decomposed hydrolytically by heating, or the barium sulphate may be precipitated in a suspension of titanium dioxide.
