Abstract

In the production of titanium pigments, for instance those containing titanium oxide with or without barium or calcium sulphate or zinc oxide, the crude pigment is heated under pressure with water to a temperature approaching the critical temperature of water and in the presence of between about \ba1/100\be to 2 equivalents of an acid reacting compound such as hydrochloric or sulphuric acid or an acid salt, with or without a neutral salt, whereby the usual calcination step is rendered unnecessary. Examples relate to the treatment of titanium hydroxide precipitated from titanium tetrachloride or sulphate, in the presence respectively of a controlled amount of hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, the heat treatment being effected at 360 DEG C., under a pressure of 200--210 atmospheres. According to the Provisional Specification, the heat treatment may take place in the presence of bases or basic or neutral salts, or of oxidizing or reducing agents, or of colloids.
