Abstract

Coloured pigments are prepared by heating titanium oxide or a titanium compound consisting essentially of titanium hydrate or metatitanic acid together with a compound or compounds of vanadium, chromium, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel or copper, or mixtures of compounds of two or more of these metals, in a proportion of not more than 7 mols. of the metal or metals to 100 mols. of titanium compound calculated as titanium dioxide, no additional element being present as a white oxide or in a form which permits its conversion to a white oxide under the reaction conditions. Heating may be carried out between 500 and 1200 DEG C., preferably between 900 and 1000 DEG C. The colour-forming metals may be present as oxides, hydroxides or sulphides, as salts such as chlorides, sulphates, nitrates, carbonates or oxalates, or as those salts in which the metal is present as an anion, e.g. chromates and vanadates. Inert extenders incapable of conversion to white oxides under the reaction conditions, e.g. barium or calcium sulphate, may be present, and small quantities of other compounds, e.g. an alkali metal salt such as potassium carbonate, may be added prior to the heating step. According to the Provisional Specification, temperatures up to 1250 DEG C. may be employed. Specifications 384,473 and 393,474 are referred to.
