Abstract
In the manufacture of composite pigments containing titanium oxide and barium sulphate by simultaneous precipitation, or by precipitation of one constituent upon the other, the conditions are so arranged that the product contains 40-60 per cent, and preferably 45-55 per cent by weight of TiO2. During precipitation chlorides, fluorides, phosphates, or the corresponding acids may be added. The composite precipitate is washed and calcined at 700-1100 DEG C., preferably so as to convert the titanium compounds into micro- or crypto-crystalline form, as in Specification 110,535, [Class 95, Paints &c.]. Before or during calcination, neutralizing agents such as the oxides, hydroxides, or carbonates of the alkaline-earth metals, or of magnesium, or the carbonates or hydroxides of the alkali metals or sintering agents such as zinc chloride may be added.
