Abstract

Aqueous solutions of titanium compounds such as titanic sulphate or chloride are hydrolyzed by heat with or without pressure in the presence of tin compounds and the precipitated hydrated titanium oxide washed and calcined to obtain pigment titanium oxide. From 0,001 to 0,1 mols. SnO2 may be used per mol. TiO2. The tin compound may be a soluble tin salt such as stannic chloride or sulphate or dispersed ortho- or meta-stannic acid; or an alkali metal stannate which may be added directly to the main solution, or to a port thereof and the resulting mixture be added to the remainder of the solution; or a solution of a titanic salt containing ferric salt may be reduced with metallic tin or a stannous salt, and the resulting solution containing ferrous and it may be some titanous salt and also tin in solution be hydrolyzed. By effecting hydrolysis in the presence of carriers such as barium sulphate, light spar, or asbestin composite products may be obtained.
