Abstract
550,288. Zirconium oxide. AXT, M. O., and BERK & CO., Ltd., F. W. Sept. 12, 1941, No. 11720. [Class 1 (iii)] Zirconia is produced by a process in which a solution of zirconium sulphate, free from acid and from alkali salts which form double compounds with zirconium sulphate, and in the absence of a large proportion of magnesium sulphate, is hydrolysed in the presence of between 30 and 35 per cent. of calcium chloride (containing about 75 per cent. CaCl 2 ) and the precipitate calcined. Part of the calcium chloride may be replaced by an equivalent amount of calcium nitrate; if the zirconium sulphate solution contains calcium sulphate the amount of added calcium chloride is correspondingly reduced; when the solution contains iron this is reduced before the hydrolysis.
