Abstract
1456947 Carbonated zirconium oxide TH GOLDSCHMIDT AG 29 Oct 1975 [21 March 1975] 44724/75 Heading C1A Carbonated zirconium oxide hydrate (ZrO 3 (OH) 2 . CO 2 . PH 2 O) is prepared by introducing disulphatozirconic acid trihydrate H 2 ZrO (SO 4 ) 2 . 3H 2 O into a saturated aqueous solution of alkali metal chloride or sulphate at 0-35‹C., the solution containing at least equivalent amounts of alkali metal carbonate and/or bicarbonate or ammonium carbonate relative to the sulphate groups of the disulphatozirconic acid trihydrate: the mixture containing the trihydrate may be stirred until evolution of CO 2 is complete, and the carbonated zirconium oxide hydrate which precipitates out may be separated. The precipitate is washed with water, and optionally dried at room temperature in a stream of CO 2 . The product dissolves readily in ammonium carbonate solutions to form (NH 4 ) 3 ZrOH(CO 3 ) 3 2H 2 O.
