Abstract

1495267 Basic zirconium carbonate BORAX CONSOLIDATED Ltd 14 March 1975 [18 March 1974] 11840/74 Heading C1A Basic zirconium carbonate is prepared by reacting (a) an aqueous acid solution of a Zr salt of hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid or of an acid weaker than sulphuric acid in the presence of sulphate ions, with (b) an aqueous solution of an alkali-metal or ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate, the rate of contact of the solutions being controlled to ensure that the increase in pH is sufficiently slow to ensure that polymeric zirconium sulphate is formed before zirconium carbonate is precipitated. Preferably acidified zirconium sulphate or zirconyl chloride is used.
