Abstract
1368602 Copper oxide; zinc hydroxide ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 22 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 45497/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division C2] Copper oxide and/or zinc hydroxide is produced by contacting metallic copper and/or zinc respectively with oxygen and an aqueous solution of ammonia and an ammonium salt sufficient to dissolve the metal as a copper and/ or zinc ammine salt, the solution of metal ammine salt being then separated from undissolved metal and heated to precipitate copper oxide and/or zinc hydroxide. The ammonium salt may be the chloride, sulphate, carbonate or nitrate. The ammine salt solution may in the second stage have a purging gas (e.g. air or air enriched with O2) passed through to help remove NH3. The copper oxide produced may be dissolved in various acids to give salts, e.g. cupric chloride, chromate. In Example 1 Cu rings were contacted with a solution containing NH3 and NH4NO3, air being bubbled through. The resulting solution is separated off and then steam and air is passed through whereby CuO is precipitated. In Example 4 Zn sheet was used in place of the Cu rings.
