Abstract
Cubic zirconia, useful as a polish for glass, is prepared by calcining at 800 DEG C. but below 1050 DEG C. Zirconium hydroxide-free zirconium carbonate and disintegrating the calcined product. The zirconium carbonate is precipitated by sodium carbonate from zirconium sulphate solutions. The zirconium sulphate is prepared by heating a mixture of sodium carbonate and zircon ore to 1000 DEG C., treating the product with sulphuric acid and leaching with water to dissolve out the zirconium sulphate.
