Abstract
559,118. Zirconium compounds. EVERY, C. E. (Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co.). July 3, 1942. No. 9245. [Class 1 (iii)] Crude zirconium compounds are purified by evaporating to dryness a solution containing zirconyl ions and sulphate ions in proportions between 2 to 3 and 4 to 1 and also ions of an acid such as hydrochloric acid which is more readily decomposed than sulphuric acid. The residue is leached to separate dissolved impurities, leaving zirconium oxysulphate which can be calcined above 900‹ C. to yield the dioxide. The crude ore after treatment if necessary to reduce its silica content below 10 per cent. is fused with oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate of alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal, dissolved in the hydrochloric acid, and the sulphate ions are then added.
