Abstract

In the production of cell-feed solutions for electrowinning of manganese from slags, the slag is leached with an aqueous sulphuric acid-containing liquor at a rate such as to maintain the pH of the slurry at 3.5 at least, and thereafter the slurry is neutralised to pH 6.0-6.6 with a base, normally ammonia, to precipitate silica and alumina. The leach solution is normally recycled anolyte with make-up acid. The solution so obtained normally contains 30-32 g.p.l. manganese, and after oxidation to remove iron, is ready for electrolysis. The calculated quantity of sulphuric acid may be added gradually to a quantity of slag but preferably the latter is present in excess, in which case, after neutralisation the slurry of alumina and silicate precipitate in the manganese-bearing solution may be separated from the heavier excess slag which is retained as make-up for the next leach.
