Abstract

Pure aluminium hydroxide is obtained from sodium aluminate solutions containing suspended impurities such as iron, silicon and titanium oxides by precipitating a portion of aluminium hydroxide (which will contain the impurities), removing the precipitate, and precipitating the remainder of the aluminium as substantially pure hydroxide. The initial precipitation may be carried out by means of aluminium hydroxide as inoculant (the aluminium hydroxide being added or formed in situ with carbon dioxide) and inoculated mixture agitated or carbon dioxide added thereto, whereby 1-7 per cent of the alumina dissolved as aluminate may be precipitated. In the second stage, precipitation may be by inoculation and agitation or by the use of carbon dioxide. The impure aluminium hydroxide obtained in the first stage may be used as inoculant in the first stage of a further process. This procedure may be repeated until the efficiency decreases, and then the impure alumina is dissolved in sodium hydroxide and pure alumina recovered therefrom conventionally. An example is given in which the initial inoculant is equivalent to 20-25 per cent of the total precipitatable alumina.
