Abstract
545,000. Production of alumina silicon and sodium hydroxide. DEVEREUX, W. C., and PRYTHERCH, W. E. March 6, 1941, No. 3078. [Classes 1 (iii) and 90] Low-grade bauxite or other aluminous material is reduced in an arc furnace with the aid of coke and, optionally, lime &c. to a product containing substantially metallic aluminium-silicon-iron and the product is reacted with sodium hydroxide to form sodium aluminate which is then dissolved out and treated to give aluminium hydroxide which, finally, is dehydrated to give alumina. The treatment of the solution of sodium aluminate may be a by reacting with carbon dioxide or b seeding with aluminium hydroxide and allowing to stand. The sodium hydroxide formed may be used in the process. The sodium bicarbonate formed in a may be treated with lime to give sodium hydroxide which may be re-used. The siliconiron may be treated with acid to dissolve the metallic iron and give commercial silicon.
