553,034. Aluminium and magnesium compounds. STEIN & CO., Ltd., J. G., HYSLOP, J. F., and MACKENZIE, R. Dec. 4, 1941, No. 15614. [Class I (iii)] Pure alumina and relatively pure magnesia are obtained from aluminium sulphate (which may be a product of the treatment of clay with sulphuric acid) and calcium-magnesium carbonate rock by a series of steps in which the finely ground rock is added to aluminium sulphate solution heated to over 50‹ C. to produce aluminium hydroxide, calcium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and carbon dioxide ; the magnesium sulphate solution is separated and concentrated, and the crystals heated to obtain magnesium oxide. The mixed precipitate of aluminium hydroxide and calcium sulphate is heated to above 1200‹ C. to give calcium aluminate and sulphur dioxide and the calcium aluminate is treated by known methods to give alumina, e.g. by reaction with sodium carbonate and precipitation from the sodium aluminate.
