545,723. Manganese salts. SOC. METALLURGICA ITALIANA and GUARESCHI, P. Oct. 8, 1941, No. 13011. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1940. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Manganese containing iron, silicon, and other impurities is purified by dissolving it in sulphuric or other acid, the impurities being then precipitated by the addition of an oxidizing agent such as MnO 2 and by neutralization by means of ammonia or calcium carbonate in the presence of ammoniacal salts. Manganese is electrolytically deposited from the purified solution, employing a partitioned cell with aluminium or stainless steel cathodes and lead anodes ; the spent anolyte and catholyte are employed respectively to assist the solution of the impure metal and the neutralizing of the solution, and MnO 2 deposited on the anodes is used as the oxidizing agent.
