Abstract
In the production of titanium dioxide pigments an aqueous solution of titanium tetrachloride is hydrolysed in the presence of divalent negative ions derived from a substance added to the solution in a proportion not exceeding 0,1 mol to each mol TiO2 present, hydrolysis being effected in the absence of suspended insoluble material. By this means readily filterable titanic hydroxide is precipitated. The product has the rutile crystalline structure and is calcined to yield a pigment. Hydrolysis may be carried out by adding the titanium tetrachloride solution to hot water containing sulphuric, tartaric, or oxalic acid or one of their alkali metal salts and heating the mixed solutions. Specifications 274,072, [Class 95], 308,725, and 309,051, [both in Class 1 (iii)], are referred to.
