Abstract
Titanic oxide is obtained in a softer and whiter condition than p heretofore by calcining a mixture of titanium hydrate or oxide (alone or associated with barium sulphate or calcium sulphate) with a small proportion of a suitable phosphorus compound such as phosphoric acid or calcium phosphate. The crystalline product is pulverized. In one process a solution of the sulphates of iron and titanium is boiled. A precipitate is formed to which, if phosphoric acid is used, is added a salt of an alkaline earth metal to form an insoluble sulphate with the small fraction of sulphate in the precipitate. In another process a mixture of the sulphates is electrolyzed and then boiled, as described in Specification 108,850. To the precipitate are added barium carbonate or calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate. The mixture obtained in each case is then calcined. When the oxide in the titanium compound is used it is prepared by heating the hydrate to a temperature just sufficient to remove the water.
