Abstract
In the production of titanium dioxide by hydrolysis by heat of titanium bearing solutions, a titanium sulphate solution containing at least 100 grms. TiO2 per litre, having a sulphate-titanium ratio of at least 0 : 9, and having all its iron content in the ferrous state, is used for the hydrolysis. The sulphate-titanium ratio is defined as the ratio Fe : TiO2 when the solution consists of iron and titanium sulphates only, or as Fe + Fe equiv. of SO4 in sulphates other than iron or titanium sulphate: TiO2 when other sulphates are present. The necessary sulphate-titanium ratio may be obtained by adding soluble sulphates or salts which will form soluble sulphates which will not hydrolyse with the titanium; for instance, salts of iron, magnesium, tin, aluminium, zinc, sodium, potassium, or ammonium may be added. Solutions having a "factor of acidity" between 20 and 70 per cent, and preferably between 40 and 50 per cent, are advantageously used, and hydrolysis may be assisted by addition of a titanium gel prepared as described in Specification 451,890, or of colloidal titanium hydrate, finely divided calcium sulphate with anhydrite structure, or acid binding agents. By effecting hydrolysis in the presence of carriers such as barium or calcium sulphate composite pigments may be obtained. Solutions for use in the process obtained from ilmenite may be clarified by settling after coagulation of the slimes by means of glue, or by filtration after addition of diatomaceous earth. The mother liquor after separating titanium dioxide produced in the hydrolysis step may be concentrated and cooled to separate ferrous sulphate which is used to increase the sulphate-titanium ratio of a fresh batch of solution, and to recover sulphuric acid for digestion of more ilmenite. Examples of operation are given. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the following subject-matter: The use, for the hydrolysis, of solutions containing a minimum sulphate-titanium ratio of 0:6 at concentrations up to 160 grms. TiO2 per litre and of 0:4 when the titanium concentration is higher. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
