Abstract
Chlorine dioxide is produced by reacting dry hydrogen chloride gas and a non-aqueous diluent, e.g. an inert gas such as air, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide, or a non-aqueous liquid medium which is a solvent for hydrogen chloride and chlorine dioxide such as carbon tetrachloride, or trichlorethylene, with solid chlorates, e.g. sodium chlorate, at temperatures below 20 DEG C. The chlorate should be in constant motion say by using a rotating tube. The resulting gas mixture is contacted with water so that the chlorine dioxide goes into solution while any gaseous chlorine escapes.
