Abstract

Dichlorhydrin is produced by adding allyl chloride and chlorine gradually to an aqueous reaction medium, at least 90 per cent of the water required for the reaction being present in the reaction zone at the start of the reaction. Preferably the allyl chloride and chlorine are supplied in substantially equimolar proportions. Caustic alkali may be added to the reaction mixture if desired. The process may be effected continuously in at least two successive reaction zones, a portion of the allyl chloride and a portion of the chlorine being continuously added to each zone, at least 90 per cent by weight of the water required being supplied continuously to the first zone and the resulting aqueous reaction medium being passed successively through the subsequent zones. The chlorohydrination reaction thereby takes place in progressively increasing concentrations of dichlorhydrin. The allyl chloride and chlorine may be added in the gaseous or liquid state and the reaction may be carried out between temperatures of 10 DEG and 90 DEG C at atmospheric, reduced or elevated pressures. In the examples the process is carried out as 1-stage, 2-stage and 3-stage processes. In the 1-stage process some of the allyl chloride used is converted to trichlorpropane and tetrachlorpropyl ether.
