Abstract

Ethylene oxide is passed into aqueous hydrochloric acid until the solution is neutral, and ethylene chlorhydrin and ethylene glycol are recovered therefrom. A gas containing ethylene oxide and obtained, e.g. by catalytic oxidation of ethylene, may be employed. The formation of glycol may be reduced by using more concentrated hydrochloric acid, or by adding a soluble metallic chloride and increased by reacting at a higher temperature. The ethylene chlorhydrin-water azeotrope first obtained by distillation of the product may be reacted with milk of lime to give a more concentrated ethylene oxide, which may be used again in the process if glycol is the desired product. The product obtained from ethylene and chlorine water and which contains equivalent quantities of ethylene chlorhydrin and hydrochloric acid, may be used instead of aqueous hydrochloric acid itself. Examples of the process are given.
