Abstract
Polymers of aliphatic olefine hydrocarbons are treated simultaneously with chlorine and a lesser proportion of sulphur dioxide to give a product containing at least 30 per cent chlorine and not more than 5 per cent sulphur dioxide by weight. Polythene and polyisobutylene are specified. There may be prior or subsequent chlorination. The reaction may be carried out on preformed films or powder or in solution in carbon tetrachloride or trichloracetic acid. Wax, substituted ethylene oxides and phenyl salicylate may be added to the product which may be hydrolysed by boiling with aqueous alkali. Adhesive films and coatings are obtained, soluble in xylene, esters and ketones. The adhesives may be used to bond materials such as chlorinated polythene to metal. The Provisional Specification refers also to polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride as starting materials. Specification 542,414 is referred to.
