Abstract
1407159 Chlorinated polyethylene HOECHST AG 5 Dec 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 56386/73 Heading C3P Powdered polyethylene of particle size 0À1- 300 microns is chlorinated in aqueous phase, at a temperature which for at least part of the time is above the initial cyrstallite melting point according to differential thermal analysis, in the presence of silicic acid, there being added before, during or immediately after chlorination 0À01- 1À0 wt. per cent, based on starting polyethylene, of a polysiloxane containing alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups and having a polymerization degree of 10-10,000. The aqueous phase is preferably 10-30% hydrochloric acid. PVC may also be present or may be added to the product before drying. The process may be effected in two temperature stages. In examples the process is effected (1) in the presence of silicic caid treated with dimethyl polysiloxane oil, (2) with simultaneous addition of chlorine and dimethyl polysiloxane oil to a reaction mixture already containing silicic acid, (3) in the presence of silicic acid only, but with addition of dimethyl polysiloxane prior to drying of the product, and (4) as in (1) but with addition of PVC prior to drying of the product.
