Abstract
A continuous process for the production of polyvinyl fluoride comprises continuously introducing into a reaction zone maintained at above 2,000 p.s.i.g. vinyl fluoride, water and, as initiator, a ,a 1-azo-bis(isobutyramidine hydrochloride) (also known as 2,21-diguanyl-2,21-azopropane dihydrochloride), the weight ratio of vinyl fluoride: water being between 1:3 and 1:20, maintaining the contents of the reactor in a uniformly dispersed state, and continuously removing a slurry of polyvinyl fluoride in water from the reaction zone, the rates of reactant introduction and slurry removal being such that the content of polyvinyl fluoride in the reactor is kept between 2 and <PICT:0905879/IV(a)/1> 15% of the total weight of water and polyvinyl fluoride and selecting the reaction temperature and initiator concentration substantially in accordance with the accompanying graph from within the area bounded by the lines A and B and the appropriate pressure line, which may be obtained by interpolation or extrapolation where necessary. The polymer may be separated from the slurry by filtration or centrifuging, washing and drying. The products are suitable for forming films and have acceptable values in five physical tests devised to test such suitability which are described in detail in the Specification. Any polyvinyl fluoride satisfying these tests is claimed per se. Specifications 619,394, 619,395, 686,234 and 810,065 are referred to.
