Abstract

A process in which a hydrocarbon drying oil is produced by the polymerization of a diolefinic feed containing finely divided sodium as catalyst is characterized in that the feed is continuously passed through a first zone comprising an elongated tube, so that the feed is activated, and then through a second zone under reaction conditions, including residence time, such that a monomer conversion of at least 65 per cent is attained, the second zone being a tank containing a liquid mixture of feed and reaction product, and this liquid mixture then passed through a third zone comprising an elongated tube, wherein complete conversion of monomers is effected. The temperature of the mixture in the first zone may be raised gradually from room temperature to between 40 DEG and 85 DEG C., while the average residence time of the feed therein is from 5-60 minutes, while the second zone may be at 65 DEG -85 DEG C. with average residence time of 1-10 hours; the temperature of the third zone may be between 65 DEG and 85 DEG C. A specified polymerization feed comprises butadiene, styrene, straight-run mineral spirits, p-dioxane, sodium, and isopropyl alcohol. The styrene may be continuously and separately fed into the second zone.
