Abstract

High molecular weight polypropylene is made by (1) polymerizing propylene in contact with a lamellar complex containing or consisting of, an alkali metal and carbon to give a liquid low-molecular weight product and, (2) polymerizing this product, or a C6 fraction, or a dimer, or a mixture of dimers separated from this product in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aluminium alkyl compound. The complex is preferably selected from complexes of the formula KC8, KC16, KC24, KC36, KC48, and KC60, although other complexes which contain lithium, sodium, e.g. NaC64, rubidium, or caesium, may be used as well as mixtures of complexes, and also a mixture of the lamellar complex and an alkali metal supported on carbon. In (1) the polymerization is generally effected in the temperature range of 50 DEG to 200 DEG C., and at a pressure of 50 to 4,000 lbs./sq. inch gauge. The C6 fraction is preferably 4-methylpentene-1 which is obtained by employing a reaction temperature between 100 DEG -160 DEG C., and a polymerization contact time of relatively short duration. The propylene is purified before use. The reaction may be effected batchwise or continuously, and the catalyst employed as a fixed bed, fluidized bed, or a slurry in a solvent, or suspended in one or more of the liquid reaction products. The catalyst in stage (2) is preferably a mixture of titanium tetrachloride and aluminium triethyl. The high molecular weight polypropylene recovered from (2) is a crystalline powder of melting point in excess of 220 DEG C. Specification 810,023 is referred to.
