Abstract
Catalysts used in the polymerization of ethylene (Group IV (a)) are obtained by heating aluminium with a halide or oxyhalide of a Group IVA metal at a temperature up to 300 DEG C. and in the absence of polymerizable compounds. The aluminium is preferably pure and is desirably finely divided. Specified IVA metal compounds are molybdenum pentachloride and tungsten oxychloride. Sulphur compound-free diluents may be used in the preparation of the catalyst and in the polymerization, e.g. distilled benzene. Catalyst residues may be removed from the products with methanolic hydrochloric acid and/or cyclohexane.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized using as catalyst the product obtained by heating aluminium with a halide or oxyhalide of a Group IVa metal at a temperature up to 300 DEG C. and in the absence of polymerizable compounds. The aluminium is preferably used in the pure state and is desirably finely divided, but the ethylene may be a technical grade and in an example is added intermittently in the polymerization. Specified IVa metal compounds are molybdenum pentachloride and tungsten oxychloride. Diluents which are free from sulphur compounds may be used in the preparation of the catalyst and in the polymerization and listed are benzene, hexane, heptane, decahydronaphthalene, cyclohexane and cyclohexene. Alternatively the polymerization may be in bulk. Purification of products may be effected with methanolic hydrochloric acid and/or the use of cyclohexane.
