Abstract
Catalysts used in polymerizing ethylene (see Group IV (a)) are obtained by heating aluminium (preferably in the pure state) with a vanadium chloride (e.g. the tetrachloride) at a temperature up to 300 DEG C. and in the absence of polymerizable hydrocarbons. A diluent which is not contaminated with sulphur-containing impurities may be present in the preparation of the catalyst and specified are benzene, hexane, heptane, decahydronaphthalene, cyclohexane and cyclohexene. Subsequent to polymerization, catalyst residues may be removed from the polymers by the use of methanolic hydrochloric acid, methanol, solvents such as cyclohexane, or a combination of these treatments.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized by a batchwise or continuous process using as catalyst the product obtained by heating aluminium (preferably in the pure state) with a vanadium chloride (e.g. vanadium tetrachloride) at a temperature up to 300 DEG C. and in the absence of polymerizable hydrocarbons. A diluent which is not contaminated with sulphur-containing impurities, may be used in the preparation of the catalyst and/or in the polymerization and specified are benzene, hexane, heptane, decahydronaphthalene, cyclohexane and cyclohexene. The polymerization may also be effected in bulk and, if desired, technical ethylene may be used. In the example ethylene is repressurized into the autoclave during polymerization. The solid polyethylenes obtained may be purified by the use of methanolic hydrochloric acid, methanol, solvents such as cyclohexane, or a combination of treatments.
