Abstract

A process for the polymerization of an unsaturated polymerizable monomer in solution in a solvent, the difference between the boiling points of the monomer and solvent being of the order of 50 DEG C., comprises maintaining a mixture of the monomer, solvent and catalyst at polymerizing conditions in a polymerization zone, vaporizing solvent and monomer to maintain the polymerization temperature, removing the vapour from the polymerization zone, contacting the removed vapour with liquid solvent to absorb and condense the vapour, removing the heat of polymerization from the solvent and condensed vapour, and introducing the solvent and absorbed and condensed vapour into the said reaction zone. The polymerization process can be used to polymerize butadiene in an organic solvent such as benzene. Other solvents mentioned are cyclohexane and n-heptane. Other monomers mentioned are ethylene, propylene and vinylchloride. Known polymerization conditions and catalysts are employed e.g. butadiene may be polymerized using free radical catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide, diisopropylperoxydicarbonate and azobisisobutyronitrile or organometallic catalysts e.g. titanium tetraiodide with aluminium triisobutyl, may be used to produce cis-1,4-polybutadiene.
